A Preliminary Model of the Piece Population in BitTorrent
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper introduces a new analytical model for describing BitTorrent systems. This model builds on previous work on the population of peers, but attempts to go further and describe the population of pieces in the system. The model is a simple fluid model based on a Markov Chain of states, each of which represents the number of copies a piece has in the system. Preliminary results show that for a large enough system, the population of pieces in steady-state is unaffected by further increases in the system size. Results for a couple of sample scenarios are shown.

متن کاملToward Efficient On-Demand Streaming with BitTorrent
This paper considers the problem of adapting the BitTorrent protocol for on-demand streaming. BitTorrent is a popular peer-to-peer file sharing protocol that efficiently accommodates a large number of requests for file downloads. Two components of the protocol, namely the rarest-first piece selection policy and the tit-for-tat algorithm for peer selection, are acknowledged to contribute toward ...
متن کاملAnswer to BT questions
BitTorrent is a P2P file distribution system designed for distributing large files. The current mechanism used to implement BitTorrent does not support streaming of data but with few changes in the protocols of BitTorrent this system can also be used for streaming data. Two important mechanisms which we have to consider while making changes are BT’s Piece selection mechanism and Incentive mecha...

Peer-to-Peer file-sharing networks are garnering a significant share of home broadband networks. Since 2001, BitTorrent has been one of the most popular protocols for file-sharing. What makes BitTorrent so unique compared to past efforts is that it provides a builtin mechanism to ensure the fair distribution of content and prevents selfishness on the part of peers using game theoretical “tit-fo...
متن کاملDesign and Analysis of Coalitions in Data Swarming Systems
We design and analyze a mechanism for forming coalitions of peers in a data swarming system where peers have heterogeneous upload capacities. A coalition is a set of peers that explicitly cooperate with other peers inside the coalition via choking, data replication, and capacity allocation strategies. Further, each peer interacts with other peers outside its coalition via potentially distinct c...
